The Towy Valley

The River Towy

Carmarthen is linked by road from London by the M4 and then the A48 dual carriageway or the old London-Oxford-Carmarthen A40 that connects with the M5 from Birmingham and the North of England. From North Wales the A483 meets the A40 and the Towy at Llandovery.

By rail, Carmarthen can be reached from London Paddington via Swansea and stops at Ferryside and Kidwelly. The Heart of Wales Line from Swansea to Shrewsbury stops at Llandeilo, Llangadog, Llanwrda and Llandovery.

The nearest International Airport is Cardiff.

Main roads in the Towy valley are good though the A40 is frequented by motorcyclists especially at weekends and has had a number of fatalities. Other roads tend to be narrow with passing places so speeds are very much reduced but these roads tend to have very little traffic. This is an agricultural area, so there is slow moving farm traffic and cattle crossing roads. In the mountainous areas, roads are unfenced so be aware of the possibility of horses, cattle and sheep on the roads.
